Chapter Forty-Seven

Geiranger, Norway

Only Maeve and Nora went to have a conversation with Sammy. Greg looked like he was about to fall over, so Maeve told him he needed to go lie down. After helping him into the house, Nora and Maeve walked toward the barn.

Nora reached the door first but hesitated before opening it, looking back at Maeve. “Are you ready for this?”

Maeve nodded, even though she wasn’t sure she was. “No. But let’s go.”

Nora slid the barn door open. The space with the beds was empty. Maeve frowned, looking around. Had he disappeared again? Could he simply disappear at will? She’d been working under the assumption that he needed to build up some sort of speed to make it happen.

Nora tapped Maeve on the shoulder and pointed to the loft. Sammy stood braced against the railing, staring down at them.

Maeve cleared her throat. “Sammy, we’d like to speak with you.”

With a short leap, Sammy jumped over the railing and landed in a crouch in front of Maeve and Nora before straightening. Maeve took a step back once again. His size really was intimidating.

Nora stayed where she was, her arms crossed over her chest. “You need to answer some questions. Tell us about Martin’s daughter.”

Sammy nodded. “I’ve been looking for her a long time.”

Maeve’s mouth fell open at the sound of Sammy’s voice. “You can speak?”

Sammy gave her what was the most human baleful look she’d ever seen.

Nora snorted in response. “Guess so. Now, what’s with the focus on Martin’s daughter? Why have you been looking for her?”

“Because she’s one of my kind.”

Maeve frowned. “One of your kind? She’s like you?”

Sammy nodded. “We have the same parents.”

Same parents. Maeve’s mind whirled.

Nora looked between Maeve and Sammy, the crease between her eyes deepening. “But I thought she was Martin’s daughter?”

Sammy nodded. “She is. Martin is my father.”
