Chapter Forty-Seven
Geiranger, Norway
Only Maeve and Nora went to have a conversation with Sammy. Greg looked like he was about to fall over, so Maeve told him he needed to go lie down. After helping him into the house, Nora and Maeve walked toward the barn.
Nora reached the door first but hesitated before opening it, looking back at Maeve. âAre you ready for this?â
Maeve nodded, even though she wasnât sure she was. âNo. But letâs go.â
Nora slid the barn door open. The space with the beds was empty. Maeve frowned, looking around. Had he disappeared again? Could he simply disappear at will? Sheâd been working under the assumption that he needed to build up some sort of speed to make it happen.
Nora tapped Maeve on the shoulder and pointed to the loft. Sammy stood braced against the railing, staring down at them.
Maeve cleared her throat. âSammy, weâd like to speak with you.â
With a short leap, Sammy jumped over the railing and landed in a crouch in front of Maeve and Nora before straightening. Maeve took a step back once again. His size really was intimidating.
Nora stayed where she was, her arms crossed over her chest. âYou need to answer some questions. Tell us about Martinâs daughter.â
Sammy nodded. âIâve been looking for her a long time.â
Maeveâs mouth fell open at the sound of Sammyâs voice. âYou can speak?â
Sammy gave her what was the most human baleful look sheâd ever seen.
Nora snorted in response. âGuess so. Now, whatâs with the focus on Martinâs daughter? Why have you been looking for her?â
âBecause sheâs one of my kind.â
Maeve frowned. âOne of your kind? Sheâs like you?â
Sammy nodded. âWe have the same parents.â
Same parents. Maeveâs mind whirled.
Nora looked between Maeve and Sammy, the crease between her eyes deepening. âBut I thought she was Martinâs daughter?â
Sammy nodded. âShe is. Martin is my father.â
